The Android install, step by step

When the install fails

Four causes cover nearly everything.

"App not installed" with no further detail. Usually an existing copy, sometimes a different build of the same app, is still present. Uninstall it fully, restart the phone, install again. Occasionally it is genuinely storage: the installer needs roughly twice the APK size free while it works.

"There was a problem parsing the package." The download is incomplete or corrupt. Delete the file and download again on a stable connection rather than retrying the install on the same broken file.

The download never starts, or the page is blank. A network problem, not an app problem. Switch between mobile data and Wi-Fi, some Indian ISPs resolve these domains inconsistently, and that one switch fixes it more often than anything else you can try. Play Protect blocks it outright. You can override it. Whether you should is a genuine judgement call, and if you are at all unsure about where the file came from, the honest answer is to close it and use the browser.

The permission audit

Once installed, open Android's app settings and look at what was granted. A lobby app has legitimate use for very little.

• Notifications: plausible, for draw results and promotions. Yours to decline.
• Storage or photos: plausible, for uploading a verification document later. Grant it at the moment you need it, not before.
• Camera: only if you intend to scan a QR code or photograph a document in-app. Otherwise deny.

The app does not update through Play, so it prompts you inside the app and hands you a fresh APK. Two rules: only ever take the update from inside the app or from the platform's own site, and never from a link that arrives by message, however urgent it sounds. "Your app version is expired, install from this link" is the most reliably effective phishing message in this entire category, and it works because the underlying claim about update distribution is true.

iPhone and iPad

There is usually no App Store listing, for the same distribution reasons. What works: open the site in Safari, tap Share, choose Add to Home Screen. You get a full-screen icon that behaves close enough to an app for everything except push notifications.
